New brand architecture for Deutsche Bahn
|
| |
|
DB
Bahn, DB Netze, DB Schenker: Consistent brands push international growth and
make group more competitive
(Berlin, 7 December 2007)
Deutsche Bahn AG is reorganizing its brand architecture. As of December, DB Bahn
will be the official brand for all passenger mobility services. DB Netze is the
new brand for the infrastructure and services divisions. DB Schenker stands for
worldwide transport and logistics.
The new brands support the group's strategy of international expansion and
networking and present a simple, clear and uniform face to the public. The new
brands are based on the successful brand management and positioning of recent
years. Hartmut Mehdorn, CEO of DB AG, explains: "DB Group today is a leading
passenger and logistics company. The new brands help us create a powerful and
consistent image that our customers, partners and employees understand. Through
the new brands, the 230,000 employees in over 150 countries will identify more
strongly with DB Group." In the medium term, the strong new brands are expected
to boost the group's brand value. The group's organizational structure will
remain unchanged.
The group brand will be a combination of the familiar DB symbol and the title
"DB – Mobility, Networks, Logistics". Independent brands increase the importance
of each division. Long-distance, regional and urban transportation, as well as
Carsharing and Call a Bike, will be represented by the DB Bahn brand, effective
immediately. This will highlight the group's strategic focus on integrated
mobility. The division brand DB Netze represents the interplay of infrastructure
and services for sustainable mobility systems. This division develops and
operates a comprehensive range of mobility, energy, data and service networks.
Schenker and Railion will now operate as DB Schenker. The brand combines our
worldwide expertise in integrated logistics with our success as 's largest rail
freight provider.
All the services offered by Intermodal will be marketed under the DB brand
accompanied by the word "Intermodal". This means that operators, forwarders and
carriers can continue to benefit from the neutrality offered by Intermodal. All
wagonload traffic done for other forwarding customers will also use the DB
brand.

Schenker in Finland: Assisting Joulupukki
|
| |
|
Peak
season for parcels started in early November - Consumer goods keep Schenker
Express busy
(Essen/Helsinki, 28 November 2007)
Digital cameras, mobile phones, flatscreens, mp3 players, entertainment
electronics and home electronics - these are typical consumer goods that keep
Schenker's parcel service in Finland busy, especially in the pre-Christmas
period. For Schenker, the peak season usually starts in the first days of
November and lasts until the middle of December. During these few weeks, the
volume of shipments tends to increase considerably, as the Schenker teams will
have to assist "Joulupukki", as Santa Claus or Father Christmas is called in
Finland.
Schenker is the leading provider of integrated logistics services in
Finland, ranging from European and national land transport to global air and
ocean freight through to contract logistics and supply chain management. About
1,800 staff are employed by Schenker in 19 locations throughout Finland where
they provide services mainly to customers from industry and trade. Schenker's
range of services also includes the Schenker Express parcel service which
ensures that about six million parcels per year are delivered to their
destinations quickly and safely.
Schenker Express offers collection point services for mail order businesses
and e-businesses through 500 collection points throughout the country. These
collection points have long opening hours, also during weekends. In addition,
Schenker offers delivery services differing from normal schedules, such as
deliveries before normal working hours (key deliveries), evening and weekend
deliveries, unpacking and recycling services, device change services, deliveries
from businesses directly to consumers, storage, sorting and dispatching
services, electronic confirmation of delivery to customers (mobile phone,
e-mail) as well as logistics and outsourcing project solutions. A service
Express Call Center helps and serves customers 24 hours a day.

Schenker moving ahead in Vietnam
|

|
New
15,000 square meter logistics hub to be completed in April 2008 -
Joint-venture with Vietnam's largest shipping agency Gemadept
(Essen/Ho Chi Minh City, 13 November 2007)
Schenker recently marked a major milestone in Vietnam with the
ground-breaking ceremony for a 15,000 square meter logistics hub. The
ceremony was held at Song Than Industrial Zone of Binh Duong Province, close
to Ho Chi Minh City.
The new facility, which is expected to be completed by April 2008, will
significantly strengthen the capability and capacity of Schenker in Vietnam.
For this new logistics hub, Schenker has formed a logistics joint-venture
with Vietnam's largest shipping agency Gemadept. Both companies have
successfully worked together in the logistics sector since 1993. The
joint-venture is operating under the name of Schenker Gemadept Logistics
Vietnam Ltd. It will concentrate on warehousing and related contract
logistics. Other services may be integrated as well.
The logistics hub will serve both export companies with its CFS (Container
Freight Station) function as well as those international companies from the
growing hi-tech industries around the southern hub of Ho Chi Minh City.
"Our new joint-venture shall extend additional services to our existing
customers and support our further growth as one of Vietnam's leading
logistic providers. Together with Gemadept, we are in a strong position with
Schenker's international network and Gemadept's proven track record in
Vietnam to offer best services in newly-built facilities to our global
customers," said Dr. Thomas C. Lieb, member of the Board of Schenker AG for
global air and ocean freight operations.
The logistics center will add to the three existing Schenker offices with
over 120 staff. Schenker has been operating in Vietnam since 1991. Since
October, Schenker is now also present in the national market with a
fully-owned subsidiary, Schenker Vietnam Ltd, offering global air and ocean
freight services.

Schenker receives award for best reputation and
highest brand recognition
|
| |
|
The
SCHENKER brand received the LOGISTIK inside Image Award 2007 yesterday in
Berlin as Germany’s most well-known freight forwarder and contract services
provider. The award was presented by the German trade magazine LOGISTIK
inside on the basis of a survey of 300 logistics managers in trade and
industry, which was conducted by the market research institute TNS Emnid on
its behalf.
The Deutsche Bahn subsidiary Schenker achieved 100 per cent brand
recognition in the image ranking for 2007. In the assessment of its image,
Schenker was also way ahead of its competitors. In his presentation speech,
Dr. Hanspeter Stabenau, Honorary Chairman of the German Logistics
Association (BVL), said: “It is not without reason that Schenker is regarded
as the flagship company among Germany’s leading logistics services
providers.”
Hans-Jörg Hager, Chairman of the Management Board of Schenker Deutschland
AG: “We are very proud of the fact that the German logistics community sees
us as the main pillar of the freight forwarding and contract logistics
business. To achieve 100 per cent brand recognition and be top of the
popularity rankings in a market that has such a large number of strong
competitors is recognition indeed.”

More security technology for containers
|
| |
|
First
test phase between Hamburg and Hong Kong successfully concluded • Now also
fitted with GPS sensors
Schenker's oceanfreight containers that are used all over the world can now
for the first time be continuously monitored, thanks to a special new
security technique. For test purposes the company has fitted out ten of its
containers, also known as SCHENKERsmartbox, with special sensors in addition
to RFID technology. These 'GPS Security Devices' communicate the current GPS
coordinates, temperature levels and security parameters (like door
activities). The transport units are in regular use between Hamburg and Hong
Kong.
The first test phase for the RFID technology has been successfully
completed. RFID status notifications communicate the most important points
where liability changes hands, when the containers are loaded and unloaded
at the packing stations in Hamburg and Hong Kong, as well as the time of
arrival at the terminal. This gives a clear view of when and where the load
is being transshipped.
"It is becoming clear that this technology will be ripe for serial
production in the near future. At least the RFID technology promises to be
suitable for use on a wide scale, from the economic point of view as well,"
comments Dr. Wolfgang Dräger, Senior Vice President, PM Ocean Freight,
Schenker AG.
The new GPS sensors give information at regular intervals about conditions
in the container: is it cold or hot, are there any sudden temperature
changes? Does the container get shaken up in the course of the journey? Does
it deviate from the planned route? These and other data are compiled in a
report, which Schenker can then consult. "As soon as this technology is
ready for serial production, it will open up new possibilities of service to
our particularly demanding industrial customers," explains Dr. Wolfgang
Dräger. For example, the temperature of pharmaceutical products and other
sensitive goods can be continuously monitored, which could come out cheaper
in the long term than transporting them in refrigerated containers, provided
that the appropriate temperature tolerances can be guaranteed.
It is a similar situation with goods that are vulnerable to shock, like
laptops and other valuable articles. Even if it is not possible to prevent
the goods from being shaken about at all, at least you can determine in
retrospect when and where they have been exposed to shock and what has
occurred. Finally it is possible to determine when and where the door of the
container has been opened. If this happens unexpectedly or the door is
forced, an alarm is triggered and at the same time appropriate security
measures will be initiated.

Schenker completes takeover of Spain-TIR
|
| |
|
DB
subsidiary continues to expand its position in the field of European land
transport • Tighter network on the Iberian Peninsula
(Barcelona, 27 September 2007)
Deutsche Bahn subsidiary Schenker today completed its takeover of the
Spanish logistics group Spain-TIR.
The contract of purchase was signed as long ago as August 2, 2007, but it
was only last week that the official authorization, without which the
acquisition could not become a reality, was granted by the authorities.
This takeover makes it possible for Schenker to continue expanding its
European land transport network, especially on the Iberian Peninsula. Over
the last three decades, Spain-TIR has grown to become a leading supplier of
land transport services in Spain and Portugal. Spain-TIR has its own network
on the Iberian Peninsula, consisting of 19 branch offices - 16 of which are
located in Spain and three in Portugal - a storage area of 92,000 square
meters, plus 46 franchisees. The company, which operates in the field of
general cargo, direct services and logistics, has a workforce of over 800
employees and last year generated revenues of around EUR 200 million.

Beyond VMI - Schenker Leads in Replenishment
Research
|
| |
|
Collaboration
with WHU Business School • Researching Future Trends in Vendor Managed
Inventory Fulfillment Models
(Essen, 12 June 2007) Schenker, one of the world's leading providers of
integrated logistics and supply chain management services, has collaborated
with WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management in Vallendar, Germany to
research new trends in vendor managed inventory (VMI) fulfilment practices.
The research concluded that 3PLs have a greater role to play in adding value
in replenishment services such as VMI, by enabling more collaboration among
suppliers and consolidating operations across multiple buying organizations.
WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management is a well renowned international
business school specializing in the field of supply chain management via its
Kuehne-Centre for Logistics Management.
Professor Juergen Weber of WHU said “The research confirmed that many VMI
models still do not create value in the total system but rather move costs
from buyer to supplier. With new advanced forms of collaboration with all
parties involved and active controlling of their client's network inventory,
3PLs can provide solutions that lead to overall system costs reduction.”
WHU analyzed a variety of replenishment models, including the extensive
range of customer programs operated by Schenker. They identified future
scenarios for advanced replenishment models in the hi-tech sector, where
3PLs are taking active roles in managing their client's supply networks.
More details of WHU’s research in collaboration with Schenker can be found
at www.schenker.com or www.whu.edu/klm.
Alan Joseph, Vice President of Hi-Tech Logistics & Supply Chain Management
at Schenker said, “The collaboration with WHU is demonstration of Schenker’s
innovation and vision to anticipate industry needs and develop solutions of
the future. Schenker is a market leader in the provision of vendor managed
inventory programs, supporting the supply chains of many of the world’s best
known hi-tech and telecommunications companies.”

Schenker expands its business and presence in
Middle East and East Africa
|
| |
|
Regional
Head Office can now conduct its own activities in a growth market for global
logistics
(Essen/Dubai, 15 June 2007) Schenker is further expanding its presence in
the Middle East region and in East Africa. To achieve this goal, the
Deutsche Bahn subsidiary has now set up a Regional Head Office in Dubai. For
many years, Schenker was represented by partners, but has now gone a step
further and set up a joint venture in Dubai with the former BAX Global
partner Al Naboodah.
From its base in Dubai, Schenker will coordinate its activities in the
following countries: United Arab Emirates, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait,
Bahrain, Qatar, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Israel, Palestine, Syria, Yemen,
Lebanon, Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea, Somalia, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tansania
and Uganda.
Dubai is one of the most interesting growth markets for global logistics.
The port of Jebel Ali is currently expanding its annual capacity to 15
million TEUs and the new airport is expected to handle twelve million tons
of air freight each year. The favorable geographic location has not only
enabled Dubai to establish itself as a major hub in the region, but also to
gradually develop into a key node for freight traffic between East and West.
Schenker recently launched a new air freight service, offering direct
flights from Dubai via Hahn in Germany to Toledo, Ohio/USA.

New rail terminal goes into operation in Arad,
Romania
|
| |
|
Schenker
center to open up an interesting economic region
(Essen/Bucharest, 12 June 2007) Schenker has just started to operate a new
rail terminal in Arad, Romania. It is situated close by the Schenker
terminals that exist already in Bucharest and Cluj. The center has direct
siding facilities, and opens up an interesting economic region.
The new site includes a warehouse measuring 1,000 square meters, with a ramp
for direct transshipment, as an interface between rail and road. Deutsche
Bahn subsidiary Schenker offers customers who want to import or export goods
a wide range of services, including warehousing, processing, cross-docking,
packing and unpacking, as well as comprehensive transport documentation and
the handling of customs formalities.
The Europe-wide extension of the road toll, which has now reached Romania,
is just one argument in favor of considering rail in logistics strategies.
Additionally, competitive rates and transit times, and higher security
standards thanks to fewer stops and reduced waiting times, are making rail
freight transport to and from Romania more and more attractive.

Schenker links Dubai, Hahn and Toledo with new
round-trip service
|
| |
|
Halfway
round the world in sixteen hours • Particularly for customers in the
electronics, automotive, mechanical engineering and garment industries
(Essen/Dubai/Hahn/Toledo, 1 June 2007) The first Boeing 747-400F on a
round-trip flight from Dubai to Toledo, Ohio (USA) via Frankfurt/Hahn
airport will land at Hahn on 3 June at 06:30 h. The new airfreight service
from Deutsche Bahn subsidiary Schenker is specially tailored to the needs of
customers in the electronics, automotive, mechanical engineering and garment
industries.
From now on, an Emirates SkyCargo aircraft will depart Dubai International
Airport every Saturday at 23:30 h local time, heading for Germany with 110
tonnes of cargo on board. Six hours later, the cargo for European
destinations will be received by Schenker employees at Hahn, and the
aircraft will be loaded with additional shipments for the US market. The
cargo aircraft will land in Toledo eight hours later. There the largest and
highest-capacity hub of the combined Schenker and BAX organizations for the
US market will feed the shipments into the American distribution network. On
the return flight, the aircraft will arrive in Hahn again in the early
morning and in Dubai in the afternoon.
“Based on the good experience we had with our direct flight between Hahn and
Toledo last year, and on the new orders we have won, in part thanks to the
BAX integration, we are now offering our customers a single-source link
between Asia, Europe and America”, says Dr. Thomas C. Lieb, member of the
Board of Schenker AG for global air and ocean freight operations.
The new flight is closely tied to an intermodal logistics service provided
by Schenker on the main routes between Asia and Europe:
SCHENKERskybridge combines the economical rates for ocean freight from Asia
via Dubai with the speed of air freight. Compared with ocean freight alone,
this cuts transit time by up to 50 percent, at a cost that is up to 50
percent less than with air freight alone. Schenker also provides a similar
service from Asia to Vancouver for the American market.

In addition to the undeniable importance of internationality, let us not

Railog and Schenker transport industrial oven
facility by rail and sea to Russia for SMS Demag
|
| |
|
Railog
and Schenker have just completed a large, complex and demanding project for
the customer SMS Demag. Some 60 truckloads of industrial oven parts were
brought together for the customer from all over Europe. The parts were taken
directly from the suppliers. In Mukran (at the German Baltic Sea island of
Rügen) all of the cargo was reloaded onto Russian carriages. The parts were
then transported by sea via Lithuania to Russia. The carriages needed an
average of ten to twelve days for the journey from Germany to the
destination station in Novotroitsk, in the southern Urals in Russia, a
distance of some 3,700 kilometers.
There were several advantages for SMS Demag in working together with
Schenker and Railog. The loading of the Russian carriages in the German
station of Mukran in accordance with the significant standards of CIS
Railways increased the transport safety. The two logistics service providers
also took care of all of the railway and customs formalities and tracked the
progress of each of the carriages – from the point of departure to the point
of arrival. The plant and machinery manufacturer SMS Demag was therefore
able to save time and money.
Railog and Schenker used the station in Mukran for the transport. It is the
only station in Western Europe with a ferry link to the broad gauge network
of the CIS states. The reloading of all parts for the industrial oven
facility from the trucks to special broad gauge carriages was initially
carried out there and they were then transferred onto the ferry to Klaipeda
in Lithuania. Schenker and Railog coordinated the rest of the transport to
the destination in Novotroitsk with Railion Russija. With an overall weight
of over 850 tons, the carriages arrived on time and safely at Novotroitsk
thanks to the unique transport solution also – the combined use of road, sea
and rail routes.
"As the contractor for the entire project, we have in Railog a recognized
and competent partner for rail-based logistics; even exceptional transport
services are part of the daily business", said Aloys Winn, a Member of the
Board of Directors of Schenker Deutschland AG and with responsibility for
land transport. Günther J. Ferk, Managing Director of Railog GmbH, added:
"Our expertise in matters of block train systems and wagon-load transport to
South-East and Eastern Europe make us a popular partner for exceptional
projects as well as scheduled door-to-door transports within complex
supplier chains."
