Traveling CO2-Free to Copenhagen on the Climate Express

(Climate Express to head to the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen on December 5 • Dr. Rüdiger Grube: “Rail transport has a key function for climate protection.” • DB offers a special CO2-free ticket

(Berlin, December 3, 2009) Deutsche Bahn is supporting the Climate Express project of the International Union of Railways (UIC), which will mark the occasion of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen from December 7 to 18, 2009. The Climate Express aims to showcase rail as a climate-friendly and efficient mode of transportation. The special train will depart from Brussels on December 5 and will travel to Copenhagen via Cologne and Hamburg. DB will ensure that the train runs 100 percent on renewable energy along the entire route. UIC partners include DB, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and WWF International. Noteworthy passengers include Dr. Rüdiger Grube, CEO of DB; Achim Steiner, Executive Director of UNEP; Jean Pierre Loubinoux, UIC Director; and Guillaume Pepy, Director of the French State Railways SNCF. The Climate Express is a traveling conference; over 40 speakers from the political, business and scientific communities will discuss climate protection and transportation. Around 400 participants are expected in all.

“DB supports the United Nations’ objective of achieving a fair, global climate convention in Copenhagen,” stated Dr. Rüdiger Grube, CEO and Chairman of the Management Board of Deutsche Bahn AG. “Rail transport has a key function in protecting the climate. Accordingly a appropriate political framework for rail transport has to be established.” DB is offering a CO2-free event ticket to all participants and observers. The special ticket is valid from any German station to Copenhagen and back. One hundred percent of the electricity required for the journey will come from renewable energy sources.

DB is a pioneer in climate protection. It has cut its CO2-specific emissions from rail transport by just under 40 percent since 1990. The experience it has gained in rail transport is now being applied to the Group-wide climate protection program. DB aims to reduce CO2-specific emissions by 20 percent between 2006 and 2020. Its vision is for rail transport to be entirely CO2-free. This year’s DB Sustainability Report was ranked fifth overall among sustainability reports from Germany’s largest 150 major corporations. DB was able to improve upon its 12th place showing in 2007 despite much more stringent criteria. Information about DB’s diverse activities associated with its DB ECO Program is available online at www.dbecoprogram.com

DB Schenker, as an integrated logistics service provider, is among the winners of the third 3PL Executive Excellence Award. The prize was given out at the European 3PL Summit held November 24-25, 2009, in Brussels.

Conferred by eyefortransport, one of the largest providers of logistics and transportation information, the award recognizes companies that continuously deliver excellence and superior service to their customers. “3PL” stands for third-party logistics provider. Construction on the New DB Schenker Terminal in Sofia Coming to a Close

Modern logistics terminal with private sidings under construction near the Bulgarian capital • Around ten million euros invested

(Essen/Sofia, November 9, 2009) DB Schenker is constructing a new logistics center near the Bulgarian capital of Sofia. The ten-million euros centre in Bozhuriste, just 20 minutes from the center of Sofia, is scheduled to go into operation in spring 2010 and will be one of Bulgaria’s most modern freight hubs. The center is conveniently situated on the international road link between Sofia and Belgrade.

Construction began in February and is on schedule. All buildings are nearly finished. The logistics warehouse is currently being insulated. The hall, which covers an area of 3,000 square meters and is ten meters high, can hold around 4,000 pallets and will be equipped with high-bay racking. The 2,000 square meter cross-docking hall is also nearing completion. It has 30 loading bays, 20 of which have hydraulic ramps. Both buildings are equipped with state-of-the-art security technology and fire safety systems. An office complex covering roughly 3,500 square meters is also being built next to the center.

The terminal has two private sidings with a total length of approximately 220 meters. A ramp will enable three four-axle cars to be processed simultaneously. Up to six cars can be loaded and unloaded on the other track. “In our region, we are relying increasingly on railports – terminals where we can implement intermodal solutions that are profitable for our customers,” stressed Elmar Wieland, Chairman of Schenker & Co AG, Vienna, responsible for activities in Bulgaria. “Our Sofia site will open up new business opportunities thanks to its location and equipment,” said Wieland. Opportunities will be opened up both for national distribution within Bulgaria and for transportation to and from Bulgaria since the Sofia terminal will be fully integrated into DB Schenker's European network.

Deutsche Bahn supports the UN Environment Programme

DDB cooperates in the UN Environment Programme UNEP • DB and UNEP launch joint project "Train to Copenhagen" to the world climate summit • DB joins the UNEP worldwide "Climate Neutral Network"

(Berlin, 21 October 2009) Environment and climate protection are key concerns at Deutsche Bahn, both from the economic and socio-political viewpoint. Deutsche Bahn has already reduced the specific carbon dioxide emissions of rail by almost 40 per cent since 1990 and is still steadily continuing to lower that figure. In the run-up to the United Nations Climate Change Conference to be held in Copenhagen in early December, DB is now cooperating with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

"DB supports the United Nations' objective of achieving a fair, global climate convention in Copenhagen. Rail transport has a key function for climate protection. Accordingly, the politicians are called upon to create an appropriate political framework for rail transport," stated Dr. Rüdiger Grube, CEO and Chairman of the Management Board of Deutsche Bahn AG. “Reducing emissions from transport will be critical if the world is truly to combat climate change. Railways can be an important part of the solution, their role is crucial for a sustainable transport sector", said Achim Steiner, Undersecretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of UNEP.

DB has now joined the UNEP's "Climate Neutral Network". This worldwide outreach effort includes business enterprises and local authorities which have set themselves ambitious climate protection targets. DB is also supporting the UNEP "Seal the Deal" campaign. The central element is an online petition which can be signed throughout the world, demanding a fair climate agreement. It will then be presented to the heads of government of the countries attending the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen.

Moreover, the International Union of Railways (UIC) and DB, in cooperation with UNEP and WWF International, are organizing a "Train to Copenhagen". The train is the visible symbol of climate-friendly mobility and CO2-free rail transport of the future. It runs on electricity obtained solely from renewable energy sources. The train will depart from Brussels on 5 December, calling at Cologne and Hamburg before arriving in Copenhagen in time for the start of the conference.

Systagenix Wound Management, formerly the Professional Wound Care Business of Ethicon Inc., a Johnson & Johnson company, will start to operate their own Global Distribution Network when moving away from the transition services being provided by Johnson & Johnson. The creation of a best-in-class distribution network is a important objective for Systagenix towards its goal of becoming the strongest and most admired wound care company in the world. With an internationally renowned advanced and general wound care product portfolio, customers also expect to receive a high level of service from Systagenix.

DB Schenker will support Systagenix and will execute their European logistics activities, including the final deliveries to their European customers, from the Gargrave facility as well as from Girona (Northern Spain) and Prague (Czech Republic).
Girona and Prague will serve as regional distribution centers for Southern Europe and Central Europe respectively, where the other European customers will be served directly from Gargrave. DB Schenker was selected from a larger number of Third Party Logistics Companies for their high quality of service and ability to handle the medical products appropriately. Further, the ability to offer a consistent, all-inclusive and cost-effective European approach, covering groupage and full load transportation, regional Fulfilment Centres and parcel deliveries across the whole of Europe, was an important reason of being awarded with this three-year contract.
Through this concept, Systagenix can commit to deliver customer orders across Europe within 48 hours after placement of the order. The regional fulfilment centres will be replenished from Gargrave on a weekly basis and under central inventory management to ensure the overall European inventories are well balanced and kept to a minimum. The transportation between these sites will be executed by DB Schenker as well.

"Our innovative and clinically proven products improve peoples lives and can help reduce health care costs." said Mark Kirkup, Systagenix Vice President, Operations, "Through this partnership, with DB Schenker, we will be able to ensure they get to health care professionals across Europe in a timely and cost effective way."

New basketball hoops for BC Red Star Belgrade-Action in the heart of Kalemegdan fortress in Belgrade:

DB Schenker team saw a hot summer night with sky full of stars as good beginning for action. Of course romantic atmosphere was not what we had in mind; we were both lucky and happy that it was not raining.
Basketball hoops and additional equipment that had just arrived from
Italy were unloaded.
BC Red Star playground is in the very centre of the city, at the famous
Kalemegdan fortress and further more in the inner part of fortress
complex. So night delivery was a must.

With the appropriate preparations unloading was done from 23:00 till
01:00. Forklift operations in conditions of reduced visibility, transport
in the pedestrian zone of Kalemegdan, extra secured due to the fact that musical event was at the same time, tricky slope of the ground access; that was our challenge that night, challenge that do not allow mistakes.
Of course, for the observers this was just one simple unloading of trucks. So easy and simple as hammering of top basketball players.

One thousand five hundred coffee trains: DB Schenker and Kraft Foods raise their cups to celebrate the 15th year of the Jacobs Café logistics train

Mainz - The world’s second largest food and beverage maker, Kraft Foods, and the number one company in European rail freight transport, DB Schenker, are celebrating their 15th anniversary together in July: DB AG’s freight trains have been transporting coffee for Kraft Foods since the first train left the Bremen domestic port on July 1, 1993 with a load of green coffee bound for Kraft Food’s roasting facilities in Berlin-Neukölln.

Since then DB AG has averaged 100 transports per year for a total of about 1,500 trains. The beans used to make Germany’s favorite drink arrive at the Bremen seaport from Africa, Central and South America, as well as from the Far East.

“We are very pleased with the long and successful collaboration between Kraft Foods and DB Schenker. We will continue to work together in the future to develop economically and ecologically convincing logistical concepts,” said Karsten Sachsenröder, head of sales at the DB Schenker Rail business unit.

“Our collaboration pays off in many ways. We began using this environmentally-friendly transport concept to reduce CO2 emissions and contribute to climate protection long before the current climate debates,” explains Rudi Madel, director of all four Kraft Foods coffee plants in Germany.

Up until now, the logistic trains between Bremen and Berlin have eliminated almost 100,000 truck runs thereby reducing the burden on the climate by just over 35,000 tons of CO2 which they would have emitted.

Schenker d.d. in Slovenia continues the tradition of the international freight forwarding company Intertrans, which was founded in 1964. Schenker AG acquired an interest in the company in 2002; in 2003 it became a wholly owned subsidiary of Schenker AG.

Danube Nordic Shuttle has been launched

Combined rail transport with Austrian participation has been travelling between Wels and Rostock since early June

The first DB Schenker combined rail transport on the Wels-Rostock route departed from the seaport of Rostock at the beginning of June. To begin with, this train will run twice a week in both directions.

The initiators of the project are SCHENKER & CO AG (Vienna), Schenker Deutschland AG and Hangartner AG.
Together with DB Intermodal and the Kombiverkehr Deutsche Gesellschaft für kombinierten Güterverkehr mbH & Co KG, a proposal was created, which combines the advantages of rail and road in the integrated multimodal corridor between North and Southeast Europe.
The train, which is marketed between the North Cape and Southeast Europe under the name "Danube Nordic Shuttle", transports 32 fully loaded trailers per journey.

In consequence, 30,000 kilometres in road-transport and the emissions of CO2 associated with it are avoided - with a high level of planning and process reliability. Additional departures are planned for the winter timetable.
Excellent connections exist between the destination in Wels and the offices of Schenker in Austria and in the growth markets of Southeast Europe.
Commercial and industrial customers benefit from the tight network of Schenker surface transport services in the region.

Official start of construction of new state-of-the-art terminal in Salzburg Bergheim

06/05/2008 SCHENKER & CO AG is constructing the largest and most modern shipping terminal in the European DB Schenker network at a cost of around €26 million in Salzburg Bergheim.
The official start of construction took place on 24 April 2008. The new terminal will replace the two older depots at Vogelweiderstrasse and Bergheim. It was needed because of the marked increase in volume over the last few years, which exceeds the handling and administrative capacities of the old depots.
The terminal in Salzburg is also intended to supplement alongside Paris, Malmö and Friedewald as a European hub - a function that the old depots couldn't perform.
Facts and figures
10,000 m² cargo handling terminal, 4,000 m² logistics depot (2,000 m² in the form of a high-stack warehouse and 2,250 m² as cross docking area), and 3,500 m² office building, all on a site of 80,000 m².
The fully equipped cargo handling terminal will have 115 docking gates. The goods will be handled in the terminal for the most part, thereby considerably reducing noise. Quiet and clean operation is also guaranteed thanks to the 40 electric floor transporters.

The terminal has an underfloor conveyor chain with an hourly capacity of 400 tons or 680 pallets. This represents a marked increase in efficiency over traditional handling and also enhances quality and safety aspects.

Deutsche Bahn continues to grow steadily in 2007

Revenues, profits and transport performance increase for third year in a row • Mehdorn: “In order to continue on our successful course, we need a favorable decision on partial privatization in the coming weeks”

(Berlin, March 31, 2008) DB CEO and Chairman of the Management Board, Hartmut Mehdorn, commented on the company’s 2007 business figures that were presented today in Berlin by stating: “Our strategy has proven that it is right. Deutsche Bahn is in good shape to meet the challenges here at home and across Europe. In order to decisively continue on this path around the world, we need to have a favorable decision on our partial privatization in the coming weeks. The transport market is in the midst of a rapid upheaval. DB AG has to take advantage of the opportunities in front of it now. And to do so it needs additional capital. At the same time, the Federal Government could also use the proceeds from the partial privatization to finance urgently needed infrastructure measures.”

DB Schenker Provides Transport Service to VW Plant in Kaluga

Deliveries to new plant in Russia via rail • SAR GmbH successfully handling transport of materials since plant opened

(Berlin/Mainz, February 20, 2008) DB Schenker is handling the transport of materials for the new Volkswagen plant in Kaluga. Schenker Automotive Railnet GmbH (SAR), a fully-owned subsidiary of Railion Deutschland AG, has been the general contractor for the new VW plant in Kaluga, Russia since it began operations in November 2007.

Working on behalf of Volkswagen Logistics GmbH & Co. OHG, SAR handles the Skoda transports from the Czech Republic, and the Volkswagen transports from Slovakia to Kaluga, which is located about 180 kilometers south of Moscow.
“Working on behalf of VW, we manage the planning, coordination and supervision of transports that are handled by numerous sub-contractors,” notes Dr. Klaus Kremper, CEO of Railion Deutschland AG, Deutsche Bahn AG’s rail freight company. These sub-contractors include CD Cargo (Czech railways), ZSSK Cargo (Slovak railways), PKP Cargo (Polish railways), RZD (Russian railways) as well as the two operators, Argo Bohemia and Transcontainer. The main challenge involved in handling these transport activities is the coordination of 15 partners that communicate in five different languages.

“We are fulfilling the role of general contractor for VW Kaluga, although DB Schenker did not provide rail traction services itself during the initial phase of the project. This further underlines our ability to provide the entire spectrum of logistical services and that we can compete flexibly against international competition,” explained Kremper.
Volkswagen AG is one of Deutsche Bahn’s most important customers.

Ground-breaking for DB Schenker hub in Dallas

(Essen/Dallas, February 19, 2008)

Construction has now begun following a ground-breaking ceremony for the new DB Schenker logistics center at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). The roughly 19,000-square-meter facility for international air freight as well as national supply and distribution is expected to begin operating this fall.

The newly built facility will practically double BAX Global and Schenker’s existing capacity at DFW International Airport. 78 truck bays, state-of-the-art communications technology, an efficient infrastructure and security systems guarantee that freight is handled quickly while providing the highest levels of service quality. About 160 employees will work at the new site.
DFW International Airport is a strategic hub for DB Schenker in the US. It not only distributes air freight originating in Asia and Europe throughout the central US, but also consolidates freight from Texas and the Southwest in Dallas and feeds it either to the national North American distribution network or to the rest of the world.

In February 2007 BAX Global and Schenker opened a new large-scale logistics hub featuring a 21,000 square-meter logistics facility at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport in the northern US.

DB Schenker and ScandFibre Logistics announce
new paper transports from Sweden

(Mainz, 15 February 2008)

DB Schenker announced today that as of January 6th it began running seven trains per week from Swedish paper manufacturer in Gävle and Frövi to the German switching yard in Hamburg-Maschen for its customer and partner, ScandFibre Logistics AB (SFL). “The advantage of the new rail system for the customer is that through-service rail transport reduces shipping time and in contrast to the previous logistics system eliminates up to two transhipment steps, which is important because paper is a fragile product”, says Dr. Klaus Kremper, Chairman of the Management Board at Railion Deutschland AG, Europe’s biggest freight railroad.

DB Schenker is responsible for the entire transport chain that starts in Sweden. As production partner, DB Schenker collaborates exclusively with the Swedish logistic company Green Cargo in operating the new rail service. The two companies formed a joint venture for the through-service rail freight service via Denmark at the end of December.

Each of the freight cars carries 60 tons of valuable made by Korsnäs AB, a Swedish paper and cartonboard manufacturer. DB Schenker transports the sensitive goods for further processing, for example as environmentally-friendly beverage packages, throughout Europe.

DB Schenker and SFL have been successfully operating a round trip rail system for the Swedish paper industry with 21 trains per week since 1999. The Maschen switching yard near Hamburg serves as the central hub for the subsequent distribution of the paper into the European rail network.
From Maschen onwards SFL uses DB Schenker’s international single freight car network as well as partner railways to distribute over a million tons of paper in Europe, thereby reducing the burden on the environment by about 41,500 truckloads every year.
ScandFibre Logistics is a service company that is owned by Swedish paper manufacturers and provides transport and logistics solutions to the Swedish forest industry, which are continuously further developed.

Beijing-Hamburg Container Express Manages 10,000 Kilometers in Only 15 Days

Mehdorn: Important test for the Eurasian Land Bridge • Regular transport services aimed at in the next few years

(Hamburg, January 24, 2008) After just 15 days' journey time, a freight train from Beijing loaded with containers reached the marshaling yard in the Port of Hamburg this morning shortly before 10 a.m. The Beijing-Hamburg Container Express left Dahongmen Station in the Chinese capital on January 9 for the journey of over 10,000 kilometers through China, the Mongolian Republic, Russia, Belarus, Poland and Germany.

Hartmut Mehdorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Deutsche Bahn AG, stated on the train's arrival, "The excellent cooperation between the railroad employees of the six participating companies is impressive proof that Asian-European freight transport along the Eurasian Land Bridge has a future. If we can overcome further technical and bureaucratic hurdles and upgrade the infrastructure, and if the demand for transport services from Europe to Asia also grows, by the end of the decade we can aim at launching regular freight transport services along this axis."

Mehdorn's colleagues, and in particular Vladimir Yakunin, President of OAO Russian Railways, underlined the strategic importance of an efficient rail connection given the continued growth in flows of goods between Europe and Asia. The participants in the Eurasian Land Bridge project are the railroads of the six countries along the route. The goal is to strengthen rail’s competitive position in relation to ocean transport. Seagoing vessels require more than 30 days for the ocean route. "The test train was a success. We have demonstrated that we can transport goods by rail between China and Germany safely, reliably and yet twice as fast compared with ships. At the same time, we're considerably cheaper than air freight for many types of cargo. Now is the time to analyze and compare our notes with all partners and to define the next steps", stated Dr. Norbert Bensel, Member of the Board of Management for Transportation and Logistics at DB AG.

The cargo on the Beijing-Hamburg Container Express consists of electronic equipment, clothing and shoes, among other items.

Deutsche Bahn and Port of Rotterdam to cooperate

Leading transportation and logistics company signs Letter of Intent with Europe’s largest port • Common goal: improving hinterland connections and increasing rail’s modal split

(Berlin/Rotterdam, January 18, 2008) Deutsche Bahn AG and the Port of Rotterdam Authority intend to work together more closely. This was agreed by the two companies in a Letter of Intent signed yesterday by Dr. Norbert Bensel, Chairman of the Transportation and Logistics Division of Deutsche Bahn AG, and Hans Smits, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, at Deutsche Bahn’s headquarters in Berlin.

A key focus of the cooperation will be to improve the Port of Rotterdam’s hinterland connections. Smits: “Despite enormous investments in our infrastructure, the existing resources alone will not be sufficient to handle growing freight volumes. That means we have to make better use of existing resources. This will only be possible by intensifying cooperation across transport chains, because a port’s success is dependent on the capabilities of the hinterland connections.”

Bensel said, “Our Intermodal Business Unit, Europe’s leading company in combined transport services, and the largest port in Europe are natural partners here. Together we will optimize hinterland connections; it is precisely this long-distance hinterland traffic that can be bundled which enables rail to maximize its advantages and bring more traffic to environmentally-friendly rail.” Dr. Sebastian Jürgens, Head of the DB Intermodal Business Unit, added: “In Hamburg, rail has a modal split of 32 percent, whereas in the case of the Port of Rotterdam, it is currently only 11 percent. We still have a lot of room above that figure, and want to exploit this potential with new coordinated services, such as the creation of new hub and spoke concepts.” The partners also agreed to improve the exchange of data, in order to harmonize long-term forecasts and improve the interlinking of operational processes.

The Port of Rotterdam is Germany’s most important port in terms of freight handling both to and from Germany. Rotterdam was the first European port to break through the 400-million metric ton barrier, with a cargo throughput of 406 million metric tons in 2007.
DB Schenker, the brand of the Transportation and Logistics Division of Deutsche Bahn AG, provides logistics competence, integrated networks and rail expertise from a single source.
