Athens 2004: Schenker’s mission almost accomplished
“Thank you, Schenker, it all worked very well,” said Dr Klaus Steinbach, President of the German National Olympic Committee, already before the end of Games. More than 350 individual customers, including some 50 different National Olympic Committees relied on Schenker, as the Official Supplier of Freight Forwarding and Customs Clearance for the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games. Altogether, Schenker is handling about 2,000 tons of airfreight, 1,000 containers by sea, 1,000 full truck loads from all over Europe and about 100 railcars.

Most of the customers, including sponsors and media companies, needed solutions for their equipment that had to be safely transported to Athens, stored and delivered under security while there, and now, right after the Closing Ceremony, have to be forwarded back or to new destinations.

Among the biggest Schenker customers are the broadcasting companies which were reporting on the sports events for billions of radio listeners and TV viewers around the world and around the clock. The shipments for these companies had and have to be handled with great care: sensitive transmission devices, digital cameras, monitors and other expensive equipment. Most of it arrived in Greece as airfreight, and then was set up at the International Broadcasting Center (IBC). In the meantime, Schenker is preparing the move-out of some of the equipment. About 11,000 personal computers, 600 servers and 2,000 printers were installed for media coverage.

“The services for Athens are a new landmark in the history of Schenker,“ commented Dr Thomas Lieb, a member of the Board of Schenker AG and in charge of Schenker’s activities in the field of global sports events. “Athens represented an enormous challenge for our global teams and is also an obligation for future events, to turn in our best performance.”
